This trip to Hanoi and Northern Vietnam was a 40th birthday present to myself. It had been a long time since I'd taken a trip alone other than for work.
When I turned 20, I took my motorcycle trip from Walla Walla to San Francisco. When I was 21, I hitchhiked a few months around Europe. I'm glad I took both of those trips, but they weren't always fun. On them, I was frequently too cold, hungry, lonely and/or tired.
So I wanted to know if I'd grown up a little in the past couple of decades. I wanted to know if I could still adventure and if I could do it better now than then. It was lots of baggage to put on a trip, but turning 40 isn't always easy.
